It would be cool if we could either debunk or confirm the theory, but sadly I don't see that happening. I personally don't see it being a spelling mistake. In every other acknowledgement of the SNES version AFAIK, including magazines, trademark documents, the logo and even in-game text (the 'Meeting for EarthBound 2' dialog) uses the spelling 'EarthBound'. Second, the stylization of the game's title is the one used for the NES version. My assumption/theory is that instead of referring to a return of the villain, they took the oppurtunity to refer to the cancelled NES localization because of how the text refers to a war actually started/started, now a second return of Giygas. MOTHER 2 displays MOTHER 2, but the localized version known as EarthBound (stylized this way) displays 'Earth Bound' instead, also removing the mention of a 'return' of Giygas. The game title is displayed at the title screen. Later on we found prototypes of the (supposedly?) final version of the localization and even Nintendo re-released it through their Virtual Console service on the Wii U (rebranded as EarthBound Beginnings, while remaining the 'Earth Bound' logo in the game itself). Then it hit me.Īs we all know, the first MOTHER game got localized as 'Earth Bound' for the United States, yet got cancelled in favour of focusing on the upcoming Super Nintendo system. In the tweet, he quotes the post, commenting on how he and Sakurai “surprisingly” didn’t work together (per Google Translate). What I just noticed in the title screen ( ) it says 'Earth Bound' instead of 'EarthBound'. EarthBound / MOTHER The War Against Giygas After defeating Giygas, in MOTHER 2 a box pops up that says, Ness and his companions’ battle is over.
